My Story

I wrote my first fully illustrated picture book for a family friend around the age of five. While I can’t say the same about drawing, writing has always been my passion. I grew up dreaming that one day, one of my books would be selected for Oprah’s Book Club. I would appear on her show where I would just happen to meet Justin Timberlake. We’d fall madly in love and create a beautiful life singing and writing books together.

Only, it didn’t happen that way. Now don’t go blaming Oprah just because she cancelled her show. Truth be told, I got married first (sorry, Justin…but I’m happy you were able to find someone who completes you, too). I made a beautiful life in sunny South Florida with an amazing husband, two wonderful girls, and a mischievous, trash-picking dog.

But then I woke up one December morning to the harsh reality that life is short. My dad, who had been battling cancer for several years, was dying. My brothers and I packed our bags and quickly traveled to his home in New Zealand. We were blessed to spend the next two days with him. Although his speech was extremely limited, Dad managed to impart some final words of wisdom. I will never forget the two words he whispered to me, “Keep writing.” The following morning, my dad passed away.

Over the next few years, Dad’s words ran through my mind often enough that I finally decided to take action. In March of 2015, I quit my job as a Histotechnologist to focus on writing. The transition has been a rollercoaster – scary, exciting, amazing, frustrating.

I’ve learned a lot over the last few months and although my drawing skills have not progressed, I’ve definitely come a long way from that first book I wrote back when I was five. I still dream about being selected for Oprah’s Book Club (and you’ll be one of the first to know when that happens), and of course, Justin. Although we will never be married (sorry J.T., I’m still happily taken), I will be more than willing to make an appearance as one of his back-up dancers should he ever need me. Until then, I’ll continue to focus on writing and telling the stories my heart wants to tell.

Who Is Teresa

Squeals of laughter and horribly out of tune singing are staples in our household. No matter how busy the schedule, there’s always time for an impromptu dance party in the kitchen! Whether it be the Whip and Nae Nae or another new dance craze, “Club Rodrigues” is where it’s at.
Racing through the house, I quickly grab Gatorade, water bottles, snacks, and sunscreen. I promptly remind the kids, for probably the third time, to check their bags and make sure all gear and uniforms are packed.

This is a normal start to game day. It’s a whirlwind that occurs most weekends from September to June, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Tears, frustration, and cries of, “We’re going to be late” often ensue, yet we always seem to make it to the game on time…even with a stop at Dunkin’ Donuts for those pesky early morning games.

Pulling into the parking lot, a feeling of excitement begins to bubble up inside. It’s been a long, busy week working, shuttling kids, helping with homework, and soccer.

This is “our” time, at “our spot.”

We snuggle up close in the secluded, dimly-lit booth. Our fingers intertwine as we share drinks and all that has occurred during the week. Our conversation seems to flow as freely as the melted cheese fondue. Our topics range from the kids, soccer, the kids in soccer, to work, the difficulties we’re facing, and our hopes and dreams.

This is one of those moments I cherish. Our date night at the Melting Pot, where time seems to stand still.

Strolling aimlessly through charming cobblestone streets. Catching drips of “fragola” gelato before they roll down your fingertips. Gazing in awe at ancient structures, somehow still standing. Savoring delicacies so fresh and delicious you just have to finish them all. Listening to the animated lilt of “Ciao” as it rolls off the native tongue.

I think of all these and more as I toss my shiny, silver coin into Trevi Fountain, ensuring my return to Rome, Italy.
